Texas License to Carry (LTC) Requirements

Texas License to Carry (LTC) Requirements

Have you been considering a license to carry and wondering about the Texas License to Carry (LTC) Requirements?  The process is easier than you think, and more convenient than ever.

Texas LTC Application Process

Texas License to Carry (LTC) Requirements include 4 steps:
– A State-approved training class, either in-person or online
– A shooting proficiency test (shooting qualification)
– Fingerprints – performed at a State-approved vendor, at a separate cost
– Application for your License to Carry – the application is entirely online

License to Carry  vs Constitutional (permitless) Carry

While Texas has allowed permitless carry since 2021, Texas Constitutional Carry does not grant the same rights as a Texas LTC.  A Texas LTC offers broader rights and some protections not available under Constitutional Carry.  For example:
– LTC available for ages 18+ (21+ for permitless carry)
– LTC allows legal carry in areas otherwise restricted under permitless carry, such as Gun Free School Zones, campus carry, and some government buildings
– LTC allows you to ignore “Gunbuster” signs, which apply to permitless carry
– LTC offers some legal protection in cases of accidentally carrying in restricted area
– LTC allows you to skip the otherwise mandatory NICS check when purchasing firearms
– LTC allows you to carry in dozens of other states through reciprocity agreements
And several others.  Please see the DPS Website for more information.

Online vs In-Person Training

So what’s the easiest way to meet the Texas License to Carry (LTC) Requirements? The State-Approved Online Texas LTC Class makes it easier than ever.
The traditional in-person LTC class is about 6 hours long, plus the shooting proficiency.  It’s often conducted early on Saturday mornings, and at larger ranges can have 50 or more people per class.  After lunch breaks and qualifying dozens of people in waves, it turns out to be an all-day affair.
The State-approved Online LTC class saves you from all the hassle.  Take this state-approved 4-hour course online at your own convenience, from the comfort of your home, in the car, train, bus or anywhere.  The course is available 24/7, and works on any device – laptop, desktop, tablet, or phone.  Stop your study and start again later where you left off.  Once you complete the course and pass the written test, your completion certificate is available for immediate download, no waiting for it like some other providers.

Shooting Proficiency (Qualification)

Once you pass your written test, simply download your completion certificate, then enter your location on our website to find an approved local range to conduct your proficiency test.  Schedule your proficiency test and take your Online/Handgun Proficiency Training (LTC 101) form to the state-approved range.  The range will charge you a small fee to conduct your proficiency test, and could vary depending on if you have a private test, or a group test.

Submit Your LTC Application Online

Once you’ve passed your written test and shooting proficiency test, complete your online application, upload your shooting results, and then schedule a fingerprinting session from the state website.

Now What?  How Long To Get My LTC?

DPS will make every effort to issue your license within 60 days of receiving the completed application packet. If the application is incomplete or requires additional information to complete the background check, you will be notified in the manner you selected on your application.
