The Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL) was replaced by the License to Carry (LTC) in 2017, after open carry was legalized in 2016.
LTC for Concealed or Open Carry
The Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL) was replaced by the LTC after Texas legalized open carry, and the “Concealed” name was no longer accurate. The License to Carry is now used for both Concealed and Open Carry. As of 2021, Texas now allows Constitutional or Permitless Carry.

All Carry Laws are Not Equal!
While Texas allows licensed carry or “constitutional” carry, they are not the same. Constitutional or Permitless carry has additional restrictions that don’t apply to LTC holders. A Texas License to Carry offers several benefits over permitless carry, such as:
Additional legal protection in case of accidental carrying in a restricted area
Legally bypass “Gun-buster” signs
Campus Carry
School Zone Carry
Ability to carry in other states
Skip the background check when buying a gun
